Spain square in Rome is closed to cars

The famous Spain square in Rome on 4 August 2014 closed to traffic. This decision was taken by the authorities of the Italian capital in the framework of the program on expansion of pedestrian zones.

The area, located at the foot of the most beautiful staircases in Europe, now turned into a completely pedestrian area.

Because of this, tourists and residents of the capital will be able more comfortably to attend one of the most popular attractions of the Eternal city – executed in old Baroque staircase famous fountain, the boat and other architectural monuments located around the square.

A ban on the use of transport in this part of the city introduced on the initiative of the mayor of Rome, Ignazio Marino, and this is not the first reform aimed at reducing the number of private cars in the historical centre of the capital. Social policy of the mayor suggests a further reduction in the number of cars – it would make Rome more comfortable, and therefore more popular among tourists, the local administration.

Travel through the Plaza of Spain in Rome is closed to all modes of transportation, violators face a fine of €80.
