Spain: exhibition of El Greco in Toledo
From 14 March to 14 June 2014 in Toledo, Spain, will host a unique exhibition of works by the famous Spanish artist of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known worldwide under the pseudonym El Greco – The Greek of Toledo.
The exhibition «The Greek of Toledo», dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the death of famous painters, the largest collection of works by the Spanish painter. The jewel of the exhibition was the work of early El Greco, the famous icon «Dormition of the mother of God”.
The icon «Dormition of the virgin» drawn by a Spanish artist El Greco – one of the early works of El Greco, was completed in 1577. About the affiliation of the paintings painted by famous painter became known in 1983 by archaeologist Giorgos Metropulos, which is found on the icon of the Greek artist's signature.
Now the icon is stored on the island of Syros, in the Church of Ermoupolis, but for the sake of participation in the exhibition the painting was transported to Toledo, where it will stay until 14 April 2014. But by Easter, which this year falls on April 20, the famous icon will be back on Syros.
In total, the exposition will involve approximately 75 paintings of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, collected from various museums and collections around the world, including from the National gallery of Washington and the Prado Museum and the Metropolitan Museum in new York.
