Apiary at the airport in Toulouse
The international airport of Toulouse-Blagnac in France reports on a radically new direction of development — a full-fledged apiary appeared at the airport. The aim of the bee project is to show the multifunctionality and safety of modern city airports.
80 bee hives were installed on the airport territory under the guidance of the professional beekeeper Jean-Claude Shibari, the entire apiary in Toulouse-Blagnac occupies an area of 30,000 square meters. To look after unusual inhabitants of the airport there will be a special team of beekeepers, whose duties will include ensuring a comfortable and safe existence of the bee colony at the airport, they will also organize the constant presence of flowering plants for pollination.
The airport plans active development of apiary, by 2022 there will be 200 hives here, and the population of bees will reach 9 million individuals — as the management of the air harbor jokes, the number of bees will be comparable with the number of passengers. The first honey from the apiary of Toulouse-Blagnac will go on sale in the spring of 2018.
